This is what a dream car looked like in the 50s! California car, multiple trophy winner

The now-defunct brand Mercury, was Ford Motor Company’s entry-level prestige brand, positioned below Lincoln.

The Turnpike Cruiser was the brand’s halo model for the 1957-1958 range, with distinctive space age styling and miles and miles of chrome and gold.

Many forget how technically advanced American cars of the 50s were, and the Turnpike Cruiser range was able to accommodate a number of curious gadgets; including some with a ‘Breezeway’ power rear window, ‘twin jet’ air intakes atop the windshield, the automatically-adjusting "seat-o-matic" seat, and even a rudimentary average speed "computer".

Body styles initially comprised of a two and four-door hardtop, although a convertible was introduced later in 1957 and acted as the pace car for that year’s Indianapolis 500.

These upmarket American cars are a rare sight on Australian roads, but this one looks like a very well-kept example. Finished in its original colour combo of two-tone yellow and white, the car looks to be in great condition throughout.

With a strong V8 and pushbutton auto, the car is said to be a California car and is said to be a multiple trophy winner.

The big M is based in Queensland and is listed for $59,500.
