Local luxury limo: 4.9lt V8, described as good throughout

The original line of Australian Fairlanes (ZA-ZD) from 1967 to 1792 dominated the large luxury segment, largely unmatched by Holden’s Brougham at the time.

Ford’s all-new ZF of 1972 failed to match the same sales success, with increased competition thanks to Holden’s new Statesman. Buyers critiqued the new Fairlane for too closely resembling the mainstream Falcon and by 1976, when the ZH was due to arrive, the Fairlane’s market share had dwindled from a peak of 50% to 27%.

To turn the tide, Ford took the midsection of the XC architecture and grafted generous amounts of extra sheet-metal to both ends.

Its bold American-influenced design language was complimented by improved standard equipment which included radial tyres, a limited-slip differential, rear disc brakes and intermittent wipers.

The range was also rationalised into a simple two-pronged approached with the Fairlane 500 taking the place of the standard ‘Custom’, while the Marquis occupied the top-spec offering with air-conditioning, power windows and twin ‘lounge seats’ up front as standard.

This one we spotted on the classifieds looks to be an honest example of the breed, specified with the basic 4.9lt V8 and described by the seller as a ‘great car’ and in good condition throughout.

Unfortunately, we only have the two exterior photos to judge, and there isn’t much more information included within the listing.

The odometer reading is said to be 122,000 miles, and the car is accompanied by its original handbook.

If anyone is interested in investigating this classic large luxury cruiser, you can find it in Queensland, listed for $26,000.
