The Mercury Cougar was launched late in September 1966, a few years after Ford’s Mustang burst onto the scene and kicked off the personal pony car movement.

It was actually based heavily on the Mustang, albeit with a stretched wheelbase and softer suspension settings, taking on a more upmarket approach in its positioning between the Mustang and the Thunderbird.

"Untamed elegance" was its tagline, wearing an MSRP of US$2851 when new, a few hundred dollars more than the Mustang, but notably gained the 289ci (4.7lt) V8 as standard within the two initial trim levels.

This Mercury Cougar was spotted for sale in New South Wales but is said to be an original rust free California car.

Its 302ci (4.9lt) V8 has been upgraded with an Edelbrock carburettor, magnaflow extractors, Mallory electric point distributor and an oversized radiator with electric fans.

The interior is described as exceptional, and looks to be intact and free of noticeable wear and tear.

The Cougar comes with new tyres, atop gunmetal grey aftermarket wheels.

For many years, Cougar values lagged behind the money asked of Mustangs of a similar vintage. More recently however, price disparity has shrunken although they still offer much of the same Mustang magic, yet also offer something a little different.

This Cougar is based in New South Wales and is listed for $32,999.
