The W124-generation of Benz has been a prime example of recent growing interest in more modern ‘youngtimer’ classics.

Developed to fill the gap between Mercedes-Benz’s simple compact cars and the larger tech-filled S-class, the W124 found success in many markets around the world thanks to its expansive range of bodies (sedans, coupes and wagons) and engines.

Despite costing well over six-figures when new in certain specification, collector interest in this generation was minimal until recently. Prices for top-end AMGs and rare high-spec coupes have blossomed to as-new prices overseas, but most mainstream sedans still offer great buying in the under $10,000 segment.

They’re a great first-time classic too, coming from Benz’s "over-engineered" era – more than 2.7 million of the things were produced over their 13 year-run. And they’re notoriously able to spin the odo well past seven-figures with little other than routine maintenance.

This 1986 example looks to be an honest surviving example, in 230E specification which denotes a petrol-powered 2.3lt inline-four in place under the bonnet.

The E-class predecessor is described as 100% original and has had a few items replaced by its current owner, including: a new windscreen, four new tyres and a new battery.

The seller also states that the car had recently passed a roadworthy in its current condition, although that certificate has since expired.

It looks to be in good condition throughout, finished in gold over an unmarked red interior.

We’re big fans of these things; Editor Allen has had a number of them in the fleet over the years. This one could feasibly be driven every day, or alternatively would make for a great first-time classic/club plate car.

The Mercedes-Benz W124 230E is based in Victoria, and is listed for $7,500.
