Luxurious old Benz limousine: long-term ownership, scarcely driven, excellent condition throughout

You were probably someone special if you were driving this W116 Mercedes-Benz when new.

Considered the predecessor to the iconic S-class, the 280SE occupied the volume sales slot of this generation of ‘Sonderklasse’ or ‘Special class’ car.

Certain examples of the preceding W108 and long-wheelbase W109 are hugely collectible and fetch up to AU$200,000 in the right body shape and specification.

These W116s haven’t reached the dizzying heights of those older models, however they remain an affordable entry-point into classic big-Benz ownership; and should hold their value as more contemporary Benzes continue to gain in popularity.

This one comes presents in 280SEL trim, which denotes the factory-fitment of the 2.8lt inline-six and with a long-wheelbase body.

The car has been with its current owner for over 20 years, and is said to have been sparsely driven as it is garage-stored in Sydney, while the owner lives interstate. The listing asserts that the Benz is driven less than 100 kms per year, and is overall in excellent condition with no rust and a scratch to the driver’s side headlamp.

The car has covered 158,000kms in its life and presents excellently in photos both outside and in.

The luxurious limousine may be worth investigating for classic Benz enthusiast, or someone after an astute entry-level classic.

The Mercedes-Benz 280SEL is based in New South Wales, and is listed for $19,990.
