Cheap classic: reportedly two-owners from new, full respray, many new parts, in good condition

By the time the Mark III Ford Cortina launched in late-1970, it faced tougher competition in the way of the emerging Japanese car market, and also suffered a sales slide thanks to a reputation for somewhat poor reliability and build quality.

A three-pronged model range included the base model ‘L’, the up-spec ‘XL’ and the six-cylinder ‘XLE’ – which borrowed both the 200ci (3.3lt) and 250ci (4.1lt) inline-six from the Falcon. Other Falcon bits were also borrowed, including the three-speed manual and optional three-speed auto. The four-speed manual was also a costly option in the day.

Sales in their day still paled in comparison to Holden’s popular Torana, and the same stands to this day on the secondary market. The upside is that the Cortina represents a much less costly buy-in for anyone after a classic family car for the weekend.

This 1972 Ford TC Cortina comes to market in XL trim, offered for sale by its claimed second owner.

It is fitted with the 2.0lt ‘Pinto’ four-cylinder matched to a four-speed manual gearbox, with new shocks at all four corners, new exhaust and extractors as well as a recent full service and a recently tuned carburettor.

It’s wearing a full respray of paint and is said to have been always garaged. The car is described to be in good condition for its age, and it seems presentable in the listing’s photos.

It may suit well as a simple first-time classic, or an affordable family classic to restore or cruise as is.

The Cortina is based in Queensland and is listed for $15,000.
