1961 Ford F100 – Today’s Tempter

Rare fourth-generation unibody longbed F-truck: unrestored and highly original survivor

1961 marked the fourth-generation redesign for Ford’s enduring F-truck.

Separate cab-chassis ‘flareside’ trucks continued to be produced in both short bed (6.5’) and long-bed (8’) configuration.

New for this generation was the new unibody styleside body, with an integrated cab and bed which Ford claimed was ‘car styling for a truck’.

Ford only made these unibodies for three years, from 1961 to 1963, and they represent a little added dimension of collectability for F-truck fans.

The F-series by this time also had some serious engines in the lineup, with Ford sharing many of its V8s between other models such as the Mustang, Thunderbird and some Mercury models.

This 1961 Ford F100 is one of those rare unibody longbeds, purchased out of Fresno California and now living in the south east suburbs of Melbourne.

It’s specified with the 292ci y-block V8 and three-speed column-shift manual.

The F100 wears 90% of its original paint and shows distinctive and characterful patina. There is a small area of rust appearing around the right-hand side tailgate hinge, however the seller states that the resto f the car is rust-free including common problem areas.

While the body shows some bumps and bruises of a life well-lived, the interior has been retrimmed in black vinyl and comes with a new set of fitted carpets from the US.

Elsewhere; all lights and indicators are functional, the original radio is present but not currently functioning, and the horn needs to be replaced.

The truck is in perfectly functioning mechanical condition and has been on numerous long drives with the owner – who states that they wouldn’t hesitate to drive it interstate.

There is a long list of recent works in the listing, including new timing chain, fuel pump, thermostat and more. The F100 will also come with numerous spare parts including new window rubbers, door seals, and a whole new headliner.

It might not be for everyone, but there’s certainly a lot to like about old simple American trucks.

This is one of the better written and detailed listings we’ve come across in a while, which indicates that this car is coming from a caring and knowledgeable caretaker.
