Historically-important classic BMW: One-of-148 RHD, great condition

Back in the 50s, BMW was not in a good shape; verging on collapse following The War and the Financial Crisis, with their future success hinging on a new line of models dubbed the ‘Neue Klasse’ (New Class).

The sedan line was launched in 1962 with the 1500, which grew in engine displacement over the next ten years and ending with the 2000. The lineage would eventually go on to spawn the global smash hit, the ‘02’ and subsequent three-series which endures to this day.

The new class coupe arrived a few short years after the first 1500 sedan; intended to be a coachbuilt flagship car and to introduce BMW’s enlarged 2.0lt M10 four-cylinder. The svelte coupe was designed in-house by Wilhelm Hofmeister and manufactured independently by Karmann Carrosserie.

A total of 9,999 2000CS coupes were produced between 1965 and 1969, all of which were built in left-hand drive configuration. 148 however, were converted and delivered new in right-hand drive to the UK.

This quintessential Polaris Silver example is one of those 148 RHD-delivered cars, and is described as an honest car with prior outer-body repairs and solid and sound internal structures.

The dark blue interior trim is said to be unrestored and in superb condition; while the mechanicals have enjoyed recent attention to brakes and suspension.

The four-speed manual is smooth and direct, with the car in overall good running condition.

Closely related to the succeeding E9 generation coupe, the 2000CS’ collectability hasn’t seen it reach the peaks and prices demanded by its younger sibling.

Whilst an E9 coupe can easily nudge six-figures; this historically important pillarless coupe is on offer for $38,000.

It’s based in Victoria and you can check out the full listing here!
