1978 Holden Premier HZ – Today’s Tempter
Recently restored, rare factory combo: 308, M21 four-speed
The HZ range is loved by many as the last traditional full-size chrome-bumper Holden.
While visual changes were subtle in comparison to the preceding HX, under the skin the much-welcomed ‘Radial Tuned Supension’ transformed the car’s handling characteristics, primarily in taming the notorious understeer befalling previous generations.
The upmarket Premier gained the Tri-matic auto as standard along swith tinted side glass, pinstriping and quad headlights; on top of the bucket seats, padded centre console, carpet and push-button radio included in the SL model.
This one differs from the usual specifications however, factory delivered with the 308ci (5.0lt) V8 and the rare M21 four-speed manual.
The car is also highly optioned with rear disc brakes, power steering and Corniche cloth seats.
The current owner has restored the car from bare metal over the past three years, coated with 2-pack paint in the original Carribean Turquoise colour and a total re-trimming of the interior to original specifications.
Original stainless steel trims, emblems and mouldings were re-installed and remain in good condition. The 308ci engine is "period correct" (assumed to be a replacement), while the car sits on reconditioned suspension and brakes.
Overall, the car presents very well with all of the hard yards done. The car’s general condition, as well as its rare factory combo will surely appeal.
The Premier is supported by a large photo file of the restoration, as well as a Holden verification letter.
The HZ is based in Queensland and is listed for $34,990.
