The BMC Mini was a global motoring game-changer; instantly recognisable by even those with the most passing interest in cars, with millions built. No car since ahs quite captured the same magic, or utilised its space more effectively.
The sporty Cooper S came about in 1963, a few years after BMC joined forces with racing car-maker Cooper.
Australian Cooper S’ began production in 1965, and gained larger 1275cc engines as well as twin fuel tanks as our fuel stations back then were a lot further apart.
They were serious racers both on the global stage and on local soil. A stock standard Cooper S dominated the 1966 Bathurst 500 Production car race; and they remain a popular fixture within historic racing today.
This 1964 Cooper S is a ready-to-race historic touring car, completely rebuilt with the best of brand new components.
Built by Melbourne’s Stillwell Motorsport Race Manager Euan McDonald; the car features a slightly bored-out and fully-built 1290cc engine with Longman special order race head, Kent forged steel camshaft and 45mm twin-choke Weber.
Inside sits a chrome-moly roll cage, Velo race seat, quick-release period correct steering wheel.
The little Cooper is a fully-inclusive race package, that comes with an enclosed trailer and a lot of spares. The car has been entered in three events with all log books, AASA passport books, and documentation to compliment the car.
We also featured this very car back in 2008, and must admit it looks like a seriously fun toy!
The seller states that they are selling due to moving house, and will no longer have space for the vehicle. They would like to see this capable historic racer go to a good home.
The Cooper S is based in New South Wales, and is listed for $55,000.
