1990 BMW E34 M5 – Today’s Tempter

Last of the hand-built M-cars: a high-point for the M5 lineage

BMW today continues to trade on a sporting heritage and purity founded by models of old; and the E34 M5 is arguably one of the most prime examples.

Built by hand back when the M-division was still a relatively small and bespoke skunkwerks outfit; they took standard 5-series off the production line and fitted the glorious 3.5lt twin-cam four-valve straight-six S38 motor, a direct relative to the M88 which was originally lifted out of BMW’s M1 supercar.

They matched the naturally-aspirated powerplant to a five-speed manual as well as working their magic on all aspects of suspension and brakes.

In its day, it was truly a supercar with seating for five and luggage space for a weekend away; capturing the magic and breadth of talent which the initial E28 M5 was lauded for, and something lost on its contemporary offspring.

The E34 M5 was the first M-car officially sold in Australia, with sources stating just 88 made it Down Under.  

This BMW E34 M5 on the market presents very original and well maintained. The seller states that it is a "delight to drive" and has been treated to new suspension and four new Continental tyres.

It carries full ACT registration until June and is eligible for Club Registration. It’s a great example of a model that truly deserves more recognition.

For all its merit, and classical appeal – the E34 generation hasn’t quite hit the radar of most collectors. But with preceding E28 M5s nudging six figures overseas, the E34 may soon have its time in the sun.

The Bavarian super saloon is based in the Australian Capital Territory, and is listed for $28,990.
