1975 Mercedes-Benz 280SE W116 – Today’s Tempter
Single family ownership since new with comprehensive history; great entry-level collectible
If you were driving one of these things when new, you were seen in something incredibly special.
The 280SE occupied the volume-slot of Benz’s illustrious W116 ‘Sonderklasse’ and is widely considered the precursor to the iconic flagship ‘S-Class’.
The preceding W108 – and long wheelbase W109 – are hugely collectible and can fetch up to $200,000 in the right body shape and specification.
The W116s haven’t quite reached those dizzying heights, but are a relatively affordable foray into classic big-Benz ownership; and should hold their value as the ‘classic’ status continues to trickle-down the three-pointed star’s back catalogue as time marches on.
It’s certainly makes a statement a classic that your neighbours will think is far pricier than it actually it.
This 1975 W116 280SE has been owned by the same family since new, and is supported by comprehensive history commensurate its indicated 157,000kms odometer reading.
The blue-over-blue Benz looks to be in great condition judging from the photos, with the only clear aftermarket departure from factory being a modern head unit.
The dealership handling the sale states that the car will be sold unregistered, but we can’t imagine the car needs too much to get it on the road.
If you’re after a handsome classic cruiser supported by extensive enthusiast knowledge, this stately 280SE makes a seriously tempting case for itself.
The car is based in Queensland and is listed for $14,990.
