Just one car failed to find a new home at Shannons’ first auction of the calendar

Shannons’ first classic car auction for 2020 took place in Sydney overnight; and with a focus on rare and collectible licence plates – there was a smaller field of cars on offer.

However, out of the 25 cars that went under the hammer last night, just one failed to find a new home.

That car in question was a gorgeous right-hook 1955 Porsche 356 ‘Pre-A’ Speedster. It made it into the pre-auction guiding range, and topped out at $780,000. It wasn’t quite enough to sell despite going on to further negotiation.

Elsewhere however, there was a strong showing for the mid-range classics, and even a few standout surprises.

A 1986 BMW E24 635 CSi (lot 35) was an envious buy at $17,000, and a 1994 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit III (Lot 43) presented an incredible amount of car for $33,000.

A 1954 Land Rover Series 1 SWB Utility (Lot 45) also fetched a healthy $46,000, reflecting growing interest in classic fourbies.

An R107 Mercedes-Benz (not traditionally a beloved generation) in top-spec 560SL guise (lot 67) fetched an amazing $85,000 – well above its $60,000 top-end estimate.

Another overachiever was a very handsome 1958 Chevrolet Biscayne (lot 58), which fetched  $17,000 over estimate – ultimately selling for $47,000 despite a notoriously difficult market for mid-century yank tanks.

Lot 61, Nulon’s ‘Project XY’ GT Tribute car also significantly exceeded its pre-auction estimate, selling for $135,000.

Of course the most staggering sales were the rare low-digit number plates. The top-seller was NSW numerical "287" (lot 30) which sold for a whopping $208,000.

All up, 25 licence plates sold for over $100,000; and all 30 of them raked in $3.84 million in sales.
