Original V8 VH wagon with mostly original interior and a heap of engine work
The VH Commodore arrived in 1981, as the third iteration of the first generation Commodore.
Little had changed cosmetically from the preceding VB and VCs, save for a subtle front-end nip and tuck and louvered tail light; but much of the development work was found under the skin.
The big news was the first appearance of the five-speed manual, but only for the improved starfire-four and 2.85lt six-cylinder.
The range was revised with the ‘L’ becoming the standard model, the ‘SL/X’ occupying the mid-tier and the ‘SL/E’ remaining at the flagship position.
This ’84 SL/X wagon is said to be an original V8 car, with a fully reconditioned 5.0lt under the bonnet (see bottom for link to the original listing to see full and comprehensive parts list).
The original transmission has been replaced with a Supra 5-speed gearbox, matched to a BorgWarner differential.
The body is reportedly all factory metal, and is coated in new acrylic paint, cornered by disc brakes all round and aftermarket 18" OX wheels.
The interior is mostly original except for an aftermarket steering wheel, shifter and head unit; but the rest of it looks to be in great condition, protected by front seat covers and dash mat.
Overall, it looks to be a well-sorted reliable bit of kit. It might not be 100% original, but looks to be a great starting point for someone to make it their own.
All you need is a set of original wheels and steering wheel, and you’d have yourself one sweet cruiser!
The VH Wagon is based in Tasmania and is listed for $16,500.
