Here’s an oddity: rare turbo Capri in outstanding surviving condition

The Australian-produced Capri roadster was produced from 1989 up until 1994 with its underpinnings provided by the robust Mazda 323.

Despite its dorky reputation, the body was actually designed by Ghia with the interior penned by Guigaro’s ItalDesign.

By the time the plug was pulled on production; over 66,000 of the things had been built – primarily for US export. Around 9,700 were sold in Australia.

During the last run of the model, Ford Australia had released an up-spec XR2 trim level to both naturally aspirated and turbo models.

The turbo models utilised the same much-loved B6T engine of the 323 and Ford’s own TX3 Laser.

This late-run Capri here is a rare surviving limited edition SE XR2 Turbo model; finished in Cobalt blue with the five-speed manual.

It’s described to be in excellent condition and presents as a car show winner.

The seller has owned and cared for this car since the 90s, and is happy to chat about the car and negotiate on price.

They point out that the car has received a near-new custom black cloth top with a fully functioning roof mechanism and a clear rear window.

The car has been complimented by a turbo timer, lowered suspension, air-conditioning re-gas with new fittings, alarm system, modern sound system; as well as various maintenance items such as timing belt, engine mounts, manifold, O2 sensors and much more.

The car has been serviced regularly every 10,000kms and is likely one of the best surviving examples of its kind.

The car is based in Western Australia, and is listed for a negotiable $9,500.
