Locked-in at home and in need of something to watch?

Well Shannons released a compelling, four-part documentary web series last year; titled ‘The End of an Era’, and charts the rise and fall of automotive manufacturing in Australia.

It's a fantastic trip down memory lane to get lost in - from our industrial start as a sun-soaked young country, to that fateful day on October 17 2017 when the last Aussie-made car (a Holden) made its way down the production line.

Triggered by Ford, Holden and Toyota successively closing their production facilities across 2016 and 2017, the series brings together amazing cache period footage (much of which is never before seen) with several experts from a range of fields. Their input details what went right and what went wrong between 1800 and 2017.

Naturally, the nostalgia-factor is high, especially across Parts Two and Three, which deal with the 60s-70s ‘muscle car’ era and the 80s-90s ‘big hair’ eras respectively. But it’s all given a sense of gravitas by the likes of Prof Graeme Davison, author Dr John Wright and former Holden stylist Leo Pruneau, among others.

The content is well-paced, informative and entertaining. Of course, there’s a focus on the Big Three, but almost everything built here gets a nod; the cars we love, the cars we forgot and the cars we love to hate.

Ably presented by noted enthusiast Shane Jacobson, the series is free to view; there’s no need to be a Shannons customer to enjoy it which, if you’re a fan of Aussie cars, you surely will.

The series can be viewed in full right here at Shannons Club TV
