Make a statement with this piece of automotive history

The name "Edsel" means little to most people: a luxury sub-brand birthed by Ford in the late 50s, with dreams of chasing the commercial success of GM in the US domestic market, while its Lincoln stablemate positioned itself further upmarket.

In the lead up to the launch of the brand, Ford embarked on an aggressive marketing and publicity campaign, teasing the new cars’ opulence and boldly claiming it as the "car of the future".

Ford famously announced it was pulling the plug on November 19 1959, just over two years since its public introduction on September 4 1957. Mention Edsel today and most will remark with words like "failure" or "disaster", but those in the know may also mention the word "collectible".

Today remain a truly interesting and unique classic proposition, with a small but dedicated following.

We tripped over this 1959 Edsel Ranger Hardtop on our classifieds and were taken by its air of 50s luxury Americana.

Just 2,451 four-door hardtop Rangers were built in the year 1959 (the smallest production pool of all available body styles); and this appears to be the only Edsel on the market in Australia right now.

It’s fitted with the 292ci Ford y-block V8, paired with a two-speed automatic. It appears to be in excellent condition throughout with the seller claiming a rebuilt engine and transmission – with receipts; and a host of other work carried out over the past five years.

If you’re after something truly unique, this piece of American automotive history is hard to go past.

The Edsel Ranger is based in Queensland and is listed for $35,000.
