Well-kept ex-Hwy Patrol Car in WA: 4.9lt V8 with Trimatic and Salisbury diff

The VL’s arrival in 1986 coincided with the arrival of unleaded fuel.

Holden’s own six-cylinder (20 years old by then) wouldn’t cut mustard with the new petrol, and their new V6 would still be three years away, arriving with the VN.

Holden famously had to "buy in" inline-sixes from Nissan; which was a PR catastrophe for the brand, with journalists even getting slapped with injunctions from the General.

That is, until everyone realised how much of a cherry the 114kW overhead cam, fuel-injected, alloy head 3.0lt RB30E was.

With the optional turbo strapped to the side, power increased to 150kW, with a modified-for-unleaded 122kW V8 also available and marketed for towing.

This 1986 VL Commodore presents with the numbers-correct V8 and trimatic auto matched to a Salisbury diff’.

The car was original utilised as a Western Australian highway patrol car, with original log books listing the Commissioner of Police, East Perth, as the original owner in late-1986.

The current seller of the car reportedly purchased the car from the long-term owner who originally purchased the car from the Police auctions in 1987.

The car presents in extremely well-maintained condition, with a near-perfect interior. The exterior also presents in great condition and is believed to be in original condition with no damage, and only minor surface rust in the boot floor and under the rear window.

The engine was fitted with a cam in 1992, along with extractors and standard exhaust.

The car has covered 286,000kms over its life, supplemented by log books and service history with receipts until 85,000kms. The original police rims are shod in new tyres, and there are holes in dash for scanner, radar gun and CB radio.

The car is based in Northern Melbourne and is listed for $29,500.
