Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R turns 30 today
Iconic giant-killer coupe changed how we thought about performance cars. See our top three stories
Nissan's famous - or is that infamous? - R32 GT-R turns 30 today. It was this day back in 1989 that the car was released on the Japan domestic market.
It was big news back then, featuring on the covers of our sister mags Wheels and MOTOR. And of course even bigger news was the dominance of the touring car versions - developed to new heights right here in Australia - particularly at Bathurst.
It was was the force to be reckoned with in the local touring car championship from part way through 1990 and into 1991-92 before rule changes saw the nature of the field change.
Running a 2.6lt turbocharged straight six, the road-going R32 claimed 276hp, a five-speed manual transmission and all-wheel-drive. That made it a formidable street car and today it is a highly-regarded and appreciating classic.
