A Countach is an icon on its own, but this 5000S is a even more special

Owning a Lamborghini Countach is a dream for many, and it’s a car that has turned into an automotive icon in its own right.

The 1984 Lamborghini Countach 5000S on sale here from Motorcar Gallery in Florida, however, comes from another automotive icon – Mario Andretti. It’s listed for US$499,000, which equates to around AU$713,000.

Andretti – if you didn’t know – boasts an unrivalled track record and is largely regarded as an all-round motorsports hero. He’s a Formula 1 World Champion, Daytona 500 winner, Le Mans 24h winner and an Indy 500 winner.

He was voted Associated Press’ Driver of the Century, and when he wasn’t winning at almost any given racing discipline involving four wheels, he was known to blast around his hometown of Pennsylvania in any number of his Lamborghinis – including a 1989 Lamborghini Countach Anniversary, a 1991 Diablo, a Murcielago, an Aventador, and this ’84 Countach 5000S.

The car is finished in its original red coat of paint, and is highlighted by pinstriping alongside Mario Andretti’s logo. The wing mirrors are also embellished with Andretti’s signature and the tan leather interior remains in original and near-perfect condition.

The 5000S model represented an earlier Countach build with a carburetted (as opposed to later fuel-injected models) 5.0lt V12.

Despite its odometer reading a meagre 17,715km, the car has recently undergone a full engine-out mechanical overhaul, returning it to near-new condition.

Just 321 Countach 5000S’ were built – making this Andretti-owned example likely one of the best you could ever get!
