Three quarters of a million isn’t enough to land Bob Jane’s racer

Despite a top bid of $749,309 by auction’s close at GraysOnline in Queensland; it wasn’t quite enough to meet the reserve of one of Australia’s most recognisable race cars – Bob Jane’s HQ Monaro.

The Chev-powered HQ was built by John Sheppard and Pat Purcell to replace Jane’s successful Camaro racers in the ’72-’73 Touring Car Championship. It’s since been restored in its semi-retired years, and was featured as our cover car for Unique Cars Magazine back in April 2015. The car remains under negotiation and we will update this story should any further developments come to light.

Featured in the same classic car auction was a Peter Brock prototype VR rally car, Holden’s testbed for the 1995 Mobil 1 Trial. That too failed to meet its reserve and remain under negotiation with the last bid coming in at $55,009. It’s just undergone a tremendously comprehensive two-year restoration, and was featured in Unique Cars magazine #429.

Another car we had our eyes on, a 1988 Brock Director Tribute, also failed to meet reserve at $48,309. It was built to extremely high standards by numerous Ex-HDT staff, as a tribute to the original development car. It bears the same interior trim as the real deal, as well as genuine HDT body kit and 16" Corvette saw blade wheels, identical to the original car. This car too remains under negotiation.

One car that did manage to get over the line with healthy money behind it was a low-mileage ’88 VL Walkinshaw – selling for $165,000.

Also selling out of their Queensland auction was a VN Group A, selling for $107,000; and 2005 HSV SV6000, selling for a solid $68,000.

Whoever took home a neat 1968 Mini Morris Cooper S for $34,609 should be pleased.

There are still lots up on the block for the taking, you can view them at Graysonline.com

Stay tuned, as we will be updating this story as more lots come to a close.
