1992 HSV VP Senator/VR GTS Prototype – Today’s Tempter

By: Alex Affat, Unique Cars magazine

HSV Prototype HSV Prototype

Authenticated pre-production prototype for the VR GTS and VS GTSR

It looks like a standard – but clean - VP Senator, but the VIN says it should be a plain V6 VP Commodore executive.

But somewhere along the production line it was adopted by HSV, given the pre-production designation "PP30", and fitted with the VR GTS’ 5.7lt V8, six-speed manual and Hydramatic limited slip differential. It also had Level Ride and the VR Senator’s premium brake package.

We featured this very car last year, with the late Brad Dunstan (former HSV Head of Engineering) stating: "PP30 was at HSV before me!... It was a pre-production prototype and used for a heap of development activities through to VR".

Somehow it escaped the scrap yard, a fate befalling many of manufacturers’ prototypes, and today presents ready for the road as a: VP shell with VR floorpan, VR GTS running gear, full VP Senator body kit and interior options.

The listing describes the car as an unrestored, original condition survivor; and overall looks very well-kept throughout. To date the odometer reads 183,623 kilometres.

The seller bears a near encyclopaedic history file including authentication from John McInerney (HSV), Warwick Bryce (HEC) and the late Brad Dunstan (HSV).

It’s a very unique car, with a boat load of significant local history.

The car is based in Victoria and is listed for $60,000.
