1988 Holden VL Commodore – Today’s Tempter

2 owners from new: atmo six with five-speed manual

It’s almost ironic that the VL of 1986 was almost deemed an embarrassment for Holden at the time – with journalists getting slapped with injunctions from the glorious Roaring Lion.

With unleaded fuel being introduced in ’86, Holden’s own six-cylinder (by then 20 years old) wouldn’t cut the mustard with the new ULP, and the new V6 that would appear in the VN was still three years away.

Holden famously had to "buy in" engines from Nissan; which was a PR catastrophe until everyone realised how great the 114kW overhead cam, fuel-injected, alloy head 3.0lt RB30E was.

With the optional turbo-six, power increased to 150kW, with a modified-for-unleaded 122kW 5.0lt V8 also available and marketed for towing. Gearbox options were either a four-speed auto or a five-speed manual.

Visual updates for the VL saw the face redesigned and a subtle ducktail boot for a more modern and sleek appearance, with the Calais receiving the biggest overhaul.

The 88 model on sale here bears the naturally aspirated RB30 six with five-speed manual.

It’s reportedly a two-owner car in good condition for its age.

The listing states the car to have no leaks, with $4000 just spent on reconditioning; with new seals clutch, brake rotors and pads.

It might not have the most desirable turbo RB30, but overall it looks to be mostly complete and in fair condition. It’s got 17" wheels and an aftermarket steering wheel inside – but the rest of the interior is all there and looks free of noticeable tears and rips. Front bar could also use a lick of paint.

Ditch the 17"s and steering wheel, and you’d have a very neat cruiser. Could suit a P-plater looking for an oldie – or just another project to add to the list.

The car is based in Queensland and is listed for $9,900.
