It needs a little love, but it’s your cheapest way into classic Porsche ownership

Porsche’s front-engined 944 was long snubbed as a serious classic – that is until air-cooled 911s went through the roof and became unaffordable for most.

The storied Stuttgart brand copped its fair share of grief when introducing the front-engined series of cars – but top brass actually intended to replace the 911 with a more conventional front-engined vehicle. One can only imagine how different the automotive landscape would look today if that had gone through…

But we digress: the original 924, co-developed with Audi, was a lacklustre first attempt, but the 944 was much improved. Performance was added, and chassis balance was markedly improved to a near 50/50 weight distribution; thanks to a rear-mounted transaxle and wider track.

944s have recently come into their own as genuine classics, thanks to its rear-engined siblings being priced out of reach for many.

While prices are bolstering, they’re still by far and away the most affordable path into classic Porsche ownership, and this one in particular offers a very affordable proposition.

It’s a 1986 Series 1 Porsche 944, with the non-turbo 2.5lt flat-four. It needs a little love, mostly in regards to the interior which is showing some age. Overall however, the car looks presentable from the exterior and it’s in running condition.

The seller states that the car comes with over $25,000 in receipts – most notably for the fitting of an upgraded five-speed manual from a Series 2 944, and the replacement of the engine transmission torque tube.

The car has 259,000kms on it and is based in Bathurst, however the seller is happy to drive it to Sydney for viewing and inspection.

The car is listed for $12,999 – he also has a spare low-kilometre automatic 944 in left-hand drive available for $3,000 if you would like a parts car.
