Cheap XY: Unrestored and in running condition

Early Falcon V8s have been hot property for a long time now, with GT-disguised mockups frequently fetching the headlines, and the big bucks. But standard Aussie family rigs are also sharply on the rise of late, so is there such thing as an affordable XR-XY anymore, especially with a bent-eight under the bonnet?

Try this on for size.

It’s a 1971 XY Fairmont wagon finished in electric blue over white vinyl trim – listed for $28,500.

It’s the cheapest XY Fairmont listed on our classifieds, by about $20,000 – so don’t expect a concours winner.

It’s described as unrestored running its original 302 Windsor and C4 Column auto. And it is a runner: the gearbox has been reconditioned and the engine is described as "well maintained and super reliable", aided by an aftermarket aluminium radiator to manage temps.

The car has also received recent work to suspension, shocks and brakes.

Inside, the dealer-fitted air-conditioning and factory power steering are in fine working order. There’s an aftermarket modern head unit installed, and the front seat upholstery has seen better days, but it’s nothing unsalvageable.

The exterior overall looks presentable from the photos, we do spy some bubbles and pits on the doors and there’s some visible surface rust in the engine bay – but again, for the price, this is to be expected.

Overall, the car is complete and a functioning runner. It’s rare to find one in such unrestored surviving condition. Keep on driving her as is, or use it as the base for a resto – it’s all there and the choice is yours.

The car is based in Sydney, and is listed for $28,500.
