No rust, good paint, and coming from 30 plus years of single ownership.

If you bought one of these things new, you were driving something incredibly special.

Considered as a precursor to the iconic flagship S-class, the 280SE occupied the volume slot of the W116 ‘Sonderklasse’.

Its predecessor, the W108 and long wheelbase W109, are hugely collectible and desired; sometimes fetching up to $200,000 in the right body shape and specification.

These W116s haven’t quite reached those dizzying heights yet, but are a relatively affordable entry into classic big-Benz ownership; and should hold their value as the ‘classic’ status continues to trickle-down Mercedes-Benz’s back-catalogue as time goes on.

This 1979 Mercedes-Benz 280SE comes to market from over 30 years of single-ownership.

The listing states that the car has always been cared for and was always garaged.

The W116 has never had any rust and the paint remains in great condition.

Inside, the interior looks near new and near perfect. The doorcards, seats and dash  all look to be in outstanding condition, except for a few small cracks on the top of the dashboard under the dash mat.

A lot of money is said to have been spent in the car’s upkeep, including new white wall tyres, new brakes, new battery; the air conditioning has also been serviced and blows cold.

The car has always been well serviced and apparently drives very well. The odometer reads 312,216kms.

The car is based in Victoria and is listed for $14,990.
