Bona-fide Italian design icon with no expense spared

We all love high-end Toranas and Falcon GTs, but park either next to this 1977 Maserati Merak – which would draw more of a crowd at your local coffee shop on a Sunday?

The Merak went toe-to-toe with the Lamborghini Urraco and Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 in its day, both of which are fetching huge prices these days in auction houses around   the world.

There were less than 250 factory right-hand drive cars produced, with the Super Sport (SS) model taking top spot in the Merak family tree.

Debuting in 1976, it was a lightened, more powerful version capable of clocking 250km/h thanks to its overhead quadcam V6 with triple-weber carburettors, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

It was famously penned by famed Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, and is closely related to the ever-beautiful Maserati Bora.

As aforementioned, this car represents one of just 250 factory right-hand drive examples, and was purchased by a Perth resident on October 18 1976.

It’s recorded by Maserati as a rare Australian-delivered car, however the owner took delivery at the Modena Italy factory on February 17 1977. The original owner toured the car on tourist plates through Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland and France, until May 28 1978 – when the car was finally shipped home to Fremantle Western Australia.

The car comes with all books and documentation, as well as the original factory tool kit and jack.

It’s a highly original and accident-free car with recent major service and newly replaced interior, steering rods, front shocks and ball joints.

Overall, it presents as a no expense spared and well cared for example.

The car is listed for $138,000, and is currently based in New South Wales.
