Tank Fairlane Tank Fairlane

Full size 60s-Americana luxury – Original interior, new windscreen and tyres

Before the Fairlane nameplate was bestowed upon upmarket Falcons, it was initially a standalone model – Ford’s most expensive offering at the time; sitting above the Crestline, Mainline and Customline.

The first two generations were produced from 1955-1961, with the third-generation arriving in 160 as a complete redesign.

The third-generation saw wild fins and excessive chromework on the way out, replaced by smoother surfaces and sharper edges. A full width grille saw new headlights housing four lamps, with a graceful length of chrome running down the car and joining the rear fins.

Overseas, the cars were available with a swathe of engine options spanning both six and eight cylinders, encompassing even highly-desired optional Thunderbird V8s. A limited number of Australian-assembled Fairlanes were sold to the Australian market from 1959 to 1962, all of which were fitted with the 332ci V8.

It’s not clear whether this 1961-year Tank Fairlane is a rare Aussie-assembled unit. It is righthand-drive however, but may have been converted. Under the bonnet sits larger 352ci Thunderbird V8, mated to a two-speed auto.

Out back sits a continental kit, and the interior presents as all original except for the radio. Outside, the car has gained a new windscreen and four new tyres.

The car reportedly has registration until September 2019, and has covered 106,730 miles since new.

The seller states that the car is outstanding to drive, and has always been stored undercover.

It’s based in Victoria, and is listed for $57,500 (or nearest offer).
