Holden HD Special Holden HD Special

Useable classic; rust free, new paint, retrofitted 186 and a host of other goodies

Holden’s HD of 1965 was a stylistic departure, echoing more contemporary  Buick, Opel and Vauxhall designs with bulging sides to accommodate an extra 120mm of shoulder room and six-seat accommodation.

Underneath the HD was fitted with larger drum brakes, alternator-fed electrics and a larger boot. The basic 149ci and 179ci ‘red’ engines remained, though there was a new twin-carb option on the 179 boosting power output to 104kW.

Sales overshot the much-loved EH, peaking at 20,000 monthly sales just three months after release.

After 14 months of production, some 170,000 were sold.

This 1965 Holden HD Special presents itself with a great looking rust-free body that’s been repainted in its original white-over-yellow colour. Underneath there sits a retrofitted 186ci six-pot from a later HR Holden with cog-swapping duties handled by a five-speed manual gearbox from a Toyota Celica.

There’s a 3.08 diff out back, with front and rear sway bars and aftermarket wheels.

Inside the cabin, there are Sigma seats, retractable seat belts and a modern Bluetooth head unit.

It may not be 100% original but presents as an incredibly clean and useable classic that would be a great turn-key package to cruise about on the weekend.

It’s all there, with a more than presentable exterior and interior; and comes with loads of spares plus Rego paid until August 2019.

The car is based in New South Wales and is listed for $22,000 or nearest offer.
