"Youngtimer" classic seems to be the collectible buzzword for 2019, with the Pointed Star’s boxy W124 seemingly at the centre of the headlines.

It’s the AMGs and other high-spec performance models that are already fetching big numbers at auction: with a 1989 AMG 6.0 coupe fetching AUD$475,000 and a 1994 E500 fetching AUD$140,000 at RM Sotheby’s Paris Sale last week.

Though as is usually the case, once these cars are priced out of reach, the ‘collectible’ status can be expected to trickle down the order.

The W124 is already an incredibly desired shape, with the E and S-class coupes being the ones to buy with their svelte pillarless looks.

This 1995 E220 represents a very affordable way into boxy Benz ownership, and comes from one- family ownership.

It’s an Australian delivered car with books and documentation, 191,000kms and a 2.2lt four-cylinder mated to a four-speed automatic.

While its low-spec driveline may never see its asking price sore to the heights of its more performance orientated siblings, it looks like a very clean car that you could buy, drive, enjoy and ultimately lose little to no money on in future years.

The car is based in Melbourne Victoria and is listed for $10,000.

Check the books, and if scheduled maintenance is up to scratch, it could be a good buy.
