Auction eye-candy - Porsche 918 Spyder
Lunatic targa top will go for big money
You have to love the sheer madness of this car. Yes, it's a plug-in hybrid, so it should be terribly environmentally sound, shouldn't it?
Err, no. About the only green thing on this car is the brake calipers.
There's a mid-mounted 4.6lt V8 claiming 447kW (600hp) with two electric motors adding a further 210kW (282hp).
That's enough to punt it from standstill to 100km/h in 2.2sec and 290km/h in just 17.5.
It can also be driven just off the electric motors, for a tested range of 19km.
Initially priced near enough to $1 million, the 918 units were built across 2013-15. While that may out of the reach of most, it sold out in short order.
What's it worth now? Good question. Sellers tend not to publish the prices unless they're at public auction, and this car will be a good litmus test. New price plus a little is entirely possible.
It's being offered by Mecum in the USA, at its March 14-16 Pheonix auction.
