Produced from 1972 to 1987, Alfa Romeo’s Alfetta Tipo 116 was named after Alfa’s 1950s Formula One car, nicknamed the Tipo 159 Alfetta – meaning ‘Little Alfa’.

The Formula One car and the Alfetta 116 shared a then-unusual transaxle layout paired to a dependent De Dion tube rear end.

The Alfetta heralded in a new drivetrain layout for the brand, whereby the clutch and transmission were housed at the rear – similarly with their old F1 cars – for better weight distribution.

When launched in 1972, the Alfetta was only available in a four-door saloon body, with a 1.8lt four-cylinder.

Over time, engine displacement increased, and in 1974; a Giugiaro-designed fastback coupe was added to the fold as the sports oriented ‘GT’.

This Alfetta 116 GT is a relatively early 1976 model, bearing the early 1.8lt four-cylinder engine just before the 1.8 was phased out and replaced with the choice of 1.6 or 2.0lt units.

It looks to be in superb condition, having been resprayed 7 years ago in its original Alfa Romeo red hue.

The listing claims that the car has been maintained by a professional Alfa Romeo specialist, with invoices aplenty for work including brakes and master cylinder, rear suspension, water pump, starter motor, hoses and belts, bonnet and boot linings, stainless steel exhaust and new tyres.

Early Alfas have massive followings, and getting more and more sought after. They’re great driver’s cars and in the case of this Giugaro-penned coupe, may not be terrible thing to stick your money into.

The car is based in New South Wales, and is listed for $24,000.
