Rare and original survivor with all the right bits

1970 Ford Fairmont XW GS – Today’s Tempter

Ford’s Fairmont was the go-to choice in its day for those after an affordable package that yielded equal measures of luxury and performance – and when the XW arrived in 1969, it was the best one yet.

In Fairmont-guise, the standard engine was the larger 3.6lt ‘Six’ with the three-speed Ford-O-Matic transmission, and GT Falcon brakes fitted as standard.

Engineering refinements and generous insulation and sound deadening reduced cabin noise, and the Fairmont also gained individually adjustable reclining front bucket seats as standard.

The Grand Sport option pack added a variety of exterior dress-up pieces and gave buyer’s the opportunity to specify their cars to almost limitless options.

This 1970 XW Fairmont bears the very desirable GS pack; and was specified in Imperial Burgundy with light saddle trim, with the original and standard 3.6lt six-cylinder engine mated to the optional four-speed top loader.

Genuine Grand Sport Falcons and Fairmonts are thin on the ground these days – with many falling victim to the ‘GT Replica’ treatment over the ages.

This GS Fairmont therefore, is quite a rare find, especially in its current unrestored, original and surviving state.

According to the listing, it runs and drives well, though has non-structural rust in the usual places.

In such a rare specification, we’d love to see it restored; but you could feasibly cruise around in it as a survivor as is.

The car is based in Sydney, and is listed for $38,000.
