Old Holdens out in force, with the stars

Early Holden 70th Anniversary Show - Vic gallery
48-215s and FJs were out in force for the 70th anniversary

Ironically a year after Holden shut down local manufacturing, early Holden clubs across the country are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the release of the first fully locally-built car to carry the name, the 48-215.

The car was famously launched by then Prime Minister Ben Chifley in 1948, who saw it as the start of a much-needed boost for the local manufacturing industry.

The Southern Early Holden Car Club of Vic has an annual gathering at Cranbourne Racecourse, to the east of Melbourne, and this year managed to haul in a couple of star cars. They included Efijy, the FJ-inspired one-off show car and the 48-215 raced by the legendary Peter Brock at Goodwood in 2006.

There is a national meeting for early Holdens coming up at Murray Bridge in South Australia, on December 28-30. See fxfjholden.com
