Consistent buying at Shannons overnight, but some classic Europeans still struggling to move

Shannons held their Winter classic auction in Sydney last night, with plenty of cars finding loving new homes.

With a diverse blend of cars from various marques and origins, cars were being bought quite consistently, helped along by 11 No Reserve Lots. Just six cars were Passed In for the night.

In our auction preview yesterday, we took a closer look at a few cars, the first being Lot 7, a one-owner HZ Kingswood SL with a factory 4.2lt V8 and a T-bar auto. Estimates were pegged between $15,000 and $20,000, and it was sold for $16,500.

A 1967 HR Holden ute landed square in the middle of its $20,000 to $25,000 estimate, selling for $23,000.

We’ve long held the opinion that Shannons seems to be the place to go for semi-modern Euro tourers; with a 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300CE-24 coupe selling for $20,500, and a sweet manual 1991 BMW E34 M5 selling for $23,000.

One of our favourite lots was a cute little Aussie-delivered 1968 Honda S800 Roadster, which sold for $29,000 – almost square in the middle of its $25,000 to $25,000 guiding range.

At the top end of prices; a 1974 LH Torana with the L34 and SL/R 5000 pack fetched $90,000, a touch short of its $95,000 to $125,000 estimate. Though with an unoriginal motor and unoriginal coloured paint, it’s likely that its overall value took a hit in many buyers’ eyes.

The last lot of the night was a rare 2002 Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R V-Spec II Nur. A no-holds-barred performance honed variant of the venerable GT-R lineage, the car scraped into its pre-auction estimate range, ultimately selling for $144,000 – just $4,000 over its bottom line guiding range.

Just six cars failed to meet reserve; notably Lot 42, a 1969 Jaguar E-type Series 2 2+2 failed to meet reserve after a small rapid exchange of bids, ultimately passing in at $79,000.

A rare pagoda roof 1966 Mercedes-Benz 230SL passed in at $88,000 after a small flurry of interest.

And one of the headline cars for the auction, a 1978 Aston Martin V8 ‘Oscar India’ coupe failed to meet reserve after bids topped out at $220,000.
