British luxury for under five-figures

The XJ40 was born of a transitive time in Jaguar’s history. Replacing the outgoing XJ was a tall order, and various external factors such as the Oil Crisis of the 70s put development of the new "XJ40" through various delays.

Despite leadership shuffles and regulatory pressures, the new-for-the-time XJ40 established new and improved methods of design and manufacturing within the Jaguar marque.

The new XJ40 saw a significant reduction in the number of body panels and pressings throughout manufacturing and assembly, which resulted in not only lower production costs but also increased structural rigidity.

Initially when introduced in 1986; engine choices included a 2.9lt and 3.6lt inline six. However, displacement (and power) swelled over succeeding years, ending up with 3.2lt and a 4.0lt  units on offer by 1991 – with a V12 XJ12 model arriving in 1993.

Throughout its model life-cycle, the Sovereign was an markedly higher-specified offering than the base XK6 – which was sparsely equipped and would have you seeking out the optional extras list for things like air conditioning, alloy wheels, and leather upholstery.

The Sovereign had many of these included as standard, with luxurious innovations such as self-levelling suspension.

This particular car is a 1994 model, the final year of production. With the higher displacement 4.0lt six-banger and an automatic transmission, the car has 171212kms on the odo and is finished in Flamingo Red with Oatmeal leather interior. It’s also a long-wheelbase model for added comfort in the back seat.

Optional extras fitted to the car include: climate control and air conditioning, and electric sunroof.

All this is an incredible amount of car for $8,990. Pictures in the ad show various original booklets including service records and maintenance documents, as well as original brochures and Owner’s Manual.

The car is on offer by Pennant Hills auto Trader and could well be worth a look!
