The GT-Falcon ute that Ford never built

XW GTs are heroes and icons in their own right, released in 1969 with only 2287 built – they’ve become a legend in Aussie car making history and have become blue chips to collectors.

While they’re not as desired as the fabled XY, XWs still command six-figure sums for those in great condition, ones in decent nick and three-speed autos are still listed in our Buyer’s Guide at $55-85,000. The best XY GT replicas are still marked on our Market Review at a median price of $74,465

But for the blue-collar Aussies who needed a tray out back, yet fell in love with Ford’s GT heroes – nothing ever rolled off the factory to fill that void sadly.

Thanks to the restorers and builders however, just about any body-style can be and has been built in the spirit of our home-grown heroes.

From panel vans and wagons, to utes like this one, we’ve seen front-end face swaps on everything and enough grunt under the bonnet to lunch the factory GTs.

It might not be a purist’s car, but these tribute cars speak to the imagination and passion of their owners and builders – building a car for themselves, that Ford never did.

This 1970 XW ute is one such car.

Reportedly having undergone a ground up resto and rebuild – it’s painted in 1969 GT Starlight Blue with GT front end and dash swap.

Under the bonnet sits a fully built 302 Cleveland, and a host of suspension and braking components.

It looks to be an extensive build, and presents well in photos.

The car is listed at $56,000 and you can check out the full listing here!
