Living proof you don't need a fortune for a muscle car

When you look at the dominance of icons such as Mustang, Camaro and Corvette, you could be forgiven for thinking there's not much else out there when it comes to American muscle cars.

However that's not the case and, so long as you go in with an open mind, you can find some halfway serious machinery without having to spend an absolute fortune.

This 1964 Dodge Dart is a good example. Running an upgraded 340 (5.6lt) V8 with a 727 auto, it should be a pretty quick car in a straight line. Even a mildly worked 340 will produce better than 300 horses.

We reckon there's a bit of blank canvas going on here, too, as it wouldn't take a lot to visually dress up the beast.

The Dart at this stage was in its third generation and, so far as we can tell, didn't originally come with a 340. That was to come later with the Dart GTS in 1968.

In 1964 there was a choice of sixes, including a 225 (3.7lt) slant six that would look familiar to local Valiant owners, plus a 273ci (4.5lt) V8.

The car is in Queensland and is on the market for $26,500.
