Mid-level local muscle cars score well

Tonight's Shannons auction in Melbourne proved the classic and muscle car market has plenty of cash floating around, with solid prices gained and an impressive sell-through rate.

The majority of the lots were listed at no reserve and still gained respectable numbers, while only a couple of cars were passed in.

Notable were stong results for mid-range cars, such as a VH 770 Charger (lot 77) attracting a top bid of $77,000 (plus buyer premium). The final lot, and HQ GTS Monaro (lot 79), scored a protracted bidding battle and pulled a very respectable $94,000. Meanwhile a Ford XA GT (lot 76) was bought for $66,000.

You also had to respect the determination of one bidder on a Holden HZ Premier (lot 74) who bumped the bidding contest at least $10k in one hit to ensure they got the car at $35,000.

Also worth noting was the strong result for a tidy first-gen Suzbaru WRX Impreza (lot 35) - $30,000 - which suggests collectors are keeping an eye out for desirable later Japanese machinery.

Numberplates continued to defy gravity, with one three-digit lot (number 124) fetching $268,000.

The next Shannons auction is in Sydney on March 12.
