“Most extreme McLaren road car yet”

McLaren Automotive have unveiled the latest addition to their Ultimate Series range of automotive dream machines, and it’s called the Senna.

According to McLaren, the "Senna has been designed, engineered and developed with single-minded purpose: to be the ultimate McLaren track-concentrated car for the road."

Now, naming your latest hypercar after the greatest F1 driver of all time is a pretty bold move, however, judging from the claimed performance figures and the simply crazy styling, we’ve got to say, McLaren might well be on the money.

For a start, power is derived from the same Ricardo-built 4.0lt, flat-plane crack, dry-sumped, twin-turbocharged V8 found in the 720S, but the wick has been turned up significantly, and the blown V8 now produces a whopping 588kW and 800Nm.

A seven-speed dual clutch transmission has been paired to the monstrous powerplant, a McLaren say that the car can either be utilised in full automatic or manual control via the carbon-fibre mounted paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.

McLaren are claiming that the Senna tips the scales at a featherweight 1198 kilograms, or about the same weight as a Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT86.

This means that the Senna has a quite frankly absurd power-to-weight ratio of 491kW per tonne, that’s a 101kW more per tonne than a Bugatti Veyron!

McLaren themselves have described the car’s performance as "suitably savage" and say that the throttle response of the Senna is "immediate and neck-snapping", which sounds good to us.

However, the bonkers performance numbers only tell half the story of this vehicle; the Senna’s real party trick is its aerodynamics.

The Senna comes equipped with some of the most absurd aero bits ever seen on a road car, including the massive rear double diffuser and equally massive double-element, hydraulically actuated rear wing.

"The McLaren Senna is a car like no other: the personification of McLaren’s motorsport DNA, legalised for road use but designed and developed from the outset to excel on a circuit. Every element of this new Ultimate Series McLaren has an uncompromised performance focus, honed to ensure the purest possible connection between driver and machine and deliver the ultimate track driving experience in the way that only a McLaren can," says McLaren Automotive CEO, Mike Flewitt.

Just 500 examples of the Senna will be built by McLaren at their Woking Production Centre, and yes, you guessed it, they’re all already sold.
