Lots of potential in this early coupe

1980 Datsun 280ZX - today's tempter
This smart-looking coupe could turn out to be a good buy.

Datsun/Nissan Z cars have developed a passionate following over the years - none more so than the legendary 240Z, thanks to its motorsport success and its light and cheerful manners.

This is a successor to the 240 and 260 series, and was pitched more at comfort than outright sports car manners. That said, it had a bigger six in the front - the 2.8lt L28 - while boasting a more aerodynamic body.

The 280 had independent suspension all round (trailing arms on the rear), along with a much higher level of creature comfort, including more plush suspension and better sound-deadening than the 240.

While the 240 is unquestionably at the top of most shopping lists, a good one will set you back $40k or more.

However a 280 can be had for a fraction of that price, if this car is any indication. This Qld example is an early 280, has a manual trans, a T-top roof with removable panels and a very eighties red interior.

The owner is offering a roadworthy and is asking $14k. If the engine and body check out as being solid, that seems like good buying.
