Clem Smith car collection garners big results at auction

R/T E38 Valiant Charger steals the show

The auction of the late Clem Smith’s car collection took place over the past weekend and there were some very healthy bids for some excellent cars.

Here are the top performers:

1972 Chrysler VH Valiant Charger R/T E38 - $141,000

An original, matching numbers R/T ‘6 Pack’, this Charger also had added benefit of only travelling approximately 50,340 miles from new and, judging from the photos, it was in exemplary condition.

1950 Jaguar XK120 - $111,625

This gorgeous Australian delivered XK120 had seven owners before Clem smith, and was accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Jaguar’s Heritage department in the UK certifying that it was an original right-hand drive vehicle.

1935 Railton Fairmile One Drophead - $96,938

One of just 150 built in total, this blue beauty was purchased by Clem Smith from Brooklands Historic Auctioneers in the UK in 2012. Once back in Australia, Smith undertook mechanical reconditioning to ensure it was running for when he took part in the 2013 Collingrove Hillclimb in the Barossa Valley.

1973 Chrysler Charger VJ - $88,125

This awesome looking Charger is a tribute car to the original Shell Racing 1971 Bathurst entry driven by Norm Beechey and Jim McKeown. Originally a ’73 VJ with a three-speed automatic, the car was prepared by Ray Ikin and now features a four-speed manual box with a 3.23 limited-slip diff and a 245ci six-cylinder with triple Weber carburettors.

1954 Austin-Healey 100/4 BN1 - $82,250

Originally purchased by Smith in 1982, this Healey has been completely restored both mechanically and cosmetically, and features twin SU carburettors, Girling 11-inch drum brakes all round, wire wheels and a complete tonneau set with side curtains.
