Classic Iron Lions also score plenty of bids

Shannons’ Sydney Winter Classic auction was always going to make headlines with all of the excellent metal on offer.

For a start, a superb looking, original 1970 Ford Falcon XW GT-HO Phase II in Diamond White sold for a hefty $215,000.

What was stranger still though is that a 1970 Ford Falcon XY GT in Vermillion Fire, which looked to be a great example, sold for a whopping $210,000, only $5 grand shy of the GT-HO.

That’s sparked a bit of intrigue here in the office because, while the XY may arguably be the more desirable iteration, surely the HO status of the Phase II makes the XW the more precious item, and there were far less XW Phase IIs built than XY GTs.

Whatever the case, both prices are pretty remarkable and indicative of the current landscape for classic Aussie muscle cars.

Other standouts from the Sydney auction included a lovely looking 1972 Holden LJ Torana GTR XU-1 in March 17 Green that sold for $140,000, a 1967 Ford Falcon XR GT in Gold which sold for $140,000, a 1972 Chrysler Valiant VH Charger E55 770 in Vintage Red which sold for $80,000 and a 1976 Holden Torana LX SL in Absinth Yellow which sold for $37,400.
