Old school sleeper

The XY Ford Falcon is the fourth and final iteration of the second generation of the iconic Aussie marque.

Built between 1970 and 1972, the XY replaced the outgoing XW, and while the appearance of the XY may have looked roughly the same as its predecessor, the changes were many.

Cosmetically however, the XY didn’t really get too many improvements; in fact all it really got was new variations of front grilles and taillights.

The big changes for the XY came under the bonnet and in the chassis. For a start, the six-cylinder engine offerings were larger in size; 3.3lt (200ci) and 4.1lt (250ci). And while the 4.9lt (302ci) V8 remained unchanged, the 5.8lt (351ci) Cleveland V8 was offered with the option of two-barrel carburettors across the sedan range.

In addition, thanks to new spring and damper rates, the ride of the XY was said to be much better than its predecessor.

Power from the aforementioned engines was sent to the rear wheels via a choice of three-speed manual, four-speed manual or a three-speed ‘Cruisomatic’ automatic transmission.

Body styles for the XY that were offered to consumers included a four-door sedan, five-door station wagon, two-door ute and two-door panel van.

This particular XY is a ’71 ute that has, according to the seller, been extensively restored from the ground up.

The seller adds that the XY now comes equipped with a Phase III-spec 351ci engine, four-speed top loader, Hurst shifter, nine-inch limited-slip diff with 3.50 ratios, GT dash and gauges and a new brake booster, front disc brakes and rebuilt front suspension to cater for the V8.

The XY ute is $57,888 and anyone interested in this excellent bent-eight ute can view the full listing here
