The MG F, later renamed the TF, is a two-seat sports convertible that was produced between 1995 and 2005.

The F and TF were the first cars to bear the MG moniker since the MGB ceased production in 1980.

In 2005 MG paused its production of the then TF due to the British automaker going into receivership. However, MG was purchased by the Nanjing Automotive Group and restarted production of the TF in 2007.

The F/TF possessed a desirable drivetrain layout of mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, which is conducive to enthusiast driving.

Power initially came from a 1.6lt four-cylinder motor, however later models came with a slightly more powerful, higher displacement, 1.8lt four-cylinder engine. Power from the inline-four was 82kW and 88kW respectively.

This was mated to a choice of either a five-speed manual transmission or a CVT transmission that MG coined ‘Steptronic’.

The F and TF received mostly positive reviews from auto journalists, with many comparing the MG favourably to its contemporaries.

However, the Nanjing-made TFs were initially met with less than favourable reviews, due to troubling issues with build quality and reliability. Things improved over time and you’d expect a car of this age to be sorted.

This particular MG is a 2002 F model and, according to the seller, has travelled 173,000 kilometres from new.

It has the 1.8lt powerplant and is mated to the optional CVT Steptronic transmission. Judging from the photos the vehicle appears to be in good condition and certainly looks striking in its factory original gold paintwork.

The seller is asking $7990 and anyone interested in an inexpensive, open-top British sports car can view the full listing here
