JDM and practicality collide

The Mitsubishi Legnum VR4 is the Wagon variant of the eighth generation of the four-door sedan, the Gallant.

The eighth generation of the Gallant was the last VR-4 ever produced by Mitsubishi and it was first released in 1996, with production running through until 2003.

The Legnum wagon body style was released by the Japanese manufacturer to replace the previous Gallant generation’s five-door hatch variant.

Power came from 2.5lt twin-turbo V6 that could be mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or a five-speed semi-automatic gearbox which was coined ‘INVECS-II’.

Performance figures for the Gallant/Legnum were rapid, even by today’s standards, with the 0 – 100km/h sprint taking just 5.7 seconds for the semi-auto and 5.4 seconds for the manual.

Peak power produced by the 2.5lt twin-turbo V6, codenamed 6A13TT, was 206kW and 367Nm. However, due to the turbocharged nature of the engine, it could be tuned to produce considerably more with little effort.

This particular Legnum is a 1998 model with the semi-automatic gearbox and, according to the seller, has had the engine professionally replaced with a 2001 year motor with approximately 108,000 kilometres of mileage.

The seller adds that the vehicle has had a number of modifications made to it that include a Gopher aluminium radiator, Blitz three-inch stainless steel turbo-back exhaust, Tien coil-overs, front and rear sway bars, Turbosmart boost gauge, blow-off valve and a driver’s side Recaro seat.

The Legnum is $13,900 and anyone interested in this forced-induction family wagon can view the full listing here
