What's been hot on the block over the past month: HSV GTS-R, Dick Johnson's Falcon XC Hardtop racer, ex-Bob Morris Torana A9X racer and a barnfind, never-driven Carrera RSR
1996 HSV GTS-R
Sold: $127,000
Lloyds, Queensland
Resembling a Melbourne cab on steroids thanks to its ‘yellah’ paintwork, wild wings and wheels. The 1996 VS GTS-R is a rare beast from fast Commodore fettlers, HSV. Only 85 examples were built and this example, with 42,700 kms on the clock is number #11 of 75. Bidders could also negotiate for the personalised plates 11GTSR.
1977 Dick Johnson's Ford Falcon XC Hardtop
Sold: $340,000
Lloyds, Queensland
Long before he became famous for hitting a Mt Panorama rock and in-car camera quips Dick Johnson was a talented tin-top racer. His Falcon XC hardtop saw two Bathurst campaigns. In 1978 the XC finished 5th, but only lasted 24 laps in 1979.
The #17 XC hardtop was sold with a CAMS logbook in original race trim as well as Dick's race suit and helmet.
1977 Holden Torana A9X
Sold: $705,000
Mossgreen, Melbourne
Another tasty morsel of motorsport history was the ex-Bob Morris Holden Torana A9X hatchback that won the 1979 Australian Touring Car championship, the only privateer Holden team to beat the factory to a the title.
Built from one of only 10 special bodyshells supplied by Holden for motor racing, the A9X was campaigned for three years including Bathurst cmapgins.
1993 Porsche Carrera RSR
Sold: $3.4M
Southeby Villa Erba Auction
A never-driven Type 964 Carrera RSR of which only 51 were built, that we featured it in issue 401 has been sold at auction for the eye-watering price of AUD$3 million. After taking delivery the owner never slipped behind the wheel to go for a fang and with just 10 delivery kilometres on the clock, this rare Porsche was brought out of hiding after 24 years and thrown on the auction catwalk.
What's moving and shaking...
MERCEDES-BENZ SL500 R129
Two door SL Benzs have always been sought after and like a good wine, the older they get the more valuable they become. Gullwings are unobtainium and a good Pagoda model will set you back plenty.
But a 500SL from the early nineties is well within reach.
The SL500 was powered by a DOHC 5.0-litre V8 with 326 horsepower, good for a top speed of 155mph.
An original example in pale blue with cream leather sold at Shannons Melbourne recently for $9,500.
