Aussie classic – a modern-day rarity

The XA Ford Falcon was the first Falcon to be both designed and manufactured in Australia. It was sold between March 1972 and September 1973 and competed directly against the Holden HQ.

Designed by Jack Telnack, the XA featured an entirely new and larger body than its predecessor, the XY, as well as a longer list of options.

The XA also featured Australian made 302 CID and 351 CID V8 engines. The XA wagons, utes and panel vans for the first time also featured a longer wheelbase than the sedan.

All in all a total of 129,473 XA Falcons were built, and although they were largely a sales success, the model was replaced by the updated XB Falcon only 19 months after the XA’s introduction.

The XA Falcon is also noted as the first time that a two-door coupe variant was offered in the model range since the XP series of 1965–1966.

Wheels magazine tested the XA Falcon for their April edition in 1972, and had the following to say about the car;

"For Ford, the XA shows promise of being the most exciting prospect in years. The sedan range alone has an increased number of options; throw in the coupes, due in the second half of this year, and you have a range of cars that spells big trouble for the opposition,"

"And the mechanicals are well proven so there should be no difficulties in this area."

This particular XA Falcon is a 500 model and, according to the seller, has had one owner since new. Mileage of the vehicle is very low with only 129,457 kilometres on the clock.

Other features include regular service history, Cleveland V8, original plates and zero rust, which is quite rare for a car of this age.

It’s priced for $19,200 and anyone interested can view the full listing here.
