Price of fame - $385k difference for Jackie O car and local

Does this make a local BMW a bargain?

Former Jackie Kennedy car cost a bomb.

Yesterday we posted a story on a nice-looking BMW 3.0 Si up for sale for just $7000. That's probably the going rate for what was once a very expensive slice of motoring.

A sharp-eyed reader on Facebook, Carl Stoddart, then alerted us to the story of the same model in the USA selling for a gob-smacking $393,000 (US$295k). So we're talking a $385k price gap.

How come? The American vehicle (pictured) belonged to none other than Jackie O, aka Jackie Onassis, formerly Jackie Kennedy - wife of the assasinated USA president.

It turns out she bought the car new while living in New York and in fact was a long-term owner, relinquishing it in 1992. The car cost $17,000 when new and had a little over 100,000km on the clock when it was recently sold.
