Lotus Elan Plus 2 coming up at Mossgreen
Lightweight Brit would be great fun
Mossgreen's upcoming auction on April 30 has an eclectic mix of cars, motorcycles and memorabilia on offer. Something that caught our eye was this lovely Lotus Elan Plus 2.
Typical of Colin Chapman thinking, the Elan was a light and nimble two-seater (steel chassis with fibreglass body) originally, powered by a Ford Kent four-cylinder derivative, boasting a twin overhead cam head - the engine that went on to be adopted as the Lotus-Ford twin cam in various forms.
The original two-seaters started production in 1962 and this Plus 2 was built in 1967. Nominally a four-seater, you'd probably be better off treating it as a roomy two-seater. Some 2000 were built but closer to 1200 are said to survive.
In any case it's powered by a 1600 version of the powerplant, said to be in 118hp form. Transmission is a four-speed with full synchro.
This car has an exceptional history, having been with its current owners for 48 years. It's as close to original as you'll ever find and presents as being in very good condition. Evidently it also comes with a substantial history file.
We suspect you'd be hard-put to find a better example and there's no question it would bea thoroughly engaging drive.
The auctioneer is estimating it at $40-48,000.
